HEALTHY SWAPS: Greek Yogurt 🍦

Yogurt is one of biggest produced source of dairy you can find on the market behind milk. There are many different assortments of flavours and brands out there, but a lot of them sacrifice their caloric profile by packing in copious amounts of sugar to make their product stand out from the crowd. 🖐🏻

Today, we will be looking at a healthier swap for normal yogurt, and that is Greek Yogurt 🍦

Greek yogurt is made by straining out the extra whey in regular yogurt. It makes a yogurt that’s thicker, creamier and tangier than regular yogurt. Plain Greek yogurt has less sugar and more protein than regular yogurt. Compared to regular yogurt, Greek has a lot less calcium per serve due to the decrease of liquid whey and lactose. Despite this, some brands like Chobani focus on providing added amounts of calcium in their product for better bone strength. 💪🏻

For those looking to up their protein intake, Greek Yogurt is definitely for you! A single 6-ounce serving has between 15 and 20 grams of protein compared to the 9 grams in a serving of regular yogurt. Make a smoothie with Greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast, and you should stay quite full until lunch. 👊🏻

Greek yogurt typically contains only half the sodium or salt as the regular variety. A high sodium diet can cause hypertension and may increase your risk of developing heart disease. This will be beneficial in the long run as it will aid for better heart health. ❤️

Greek yogurt is a low-carb dieter’s dream with only 5 to 8 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Plain, regular yogurt has double or triple the number of carbohydrates. Keep in mind, however, that flavored yogurts brands like Chobani do have added sugar and fruit, which will increase the carb count significantly. 😮

Because of its thick, creamy texture, Greek yogurt can be substituted for other fats in baked goods. Swap cream cheese, oil, butter, sour cream or mayonnaise with yogurt to cut calories and boost the protein content of your favorite desserts! 🎂
